Delicious and Endangered: The Story of Bluefin Tuna
The objective of a recovery plan is to provide a framework for the recovery of a species so that protection under the ESA is no longer necessary. A recovery plan includes scientific information about the species and provides criteria and actions necessary for us to be able to reclassify the species to threatened status or remove it from the List. Recovery is the process of restoring endangered and threatened species to the point where they no longer require the safeguards of the Endangered Species Act. To determine if an endangered or threatened species has recovered, NOAA Fisheries reviews the best available data about the species. Section 4 (f) of the Endangered Species Act (Act) of 1973, as amended, directs the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Commerce to develop and implement recovery plans for species of animals and plants listed as endangered or threatened unless such plans will not promote the conservation of the species.
